How It Works

Fashionbone is a social networking site where members post pictures of themselves wearing various outfits and exchange fashion advice with one another.

The Basics

  1. Snap a digital photo of you in an outfit
  2. Upload the outfit picture to your profile
  3. Add details such as where/when you would expect to where it (e.g. wedding, first date, casual wear) and what the items are that you are wearing
  4. Wait for other members to score your outfit and offer you constructive comments. You might even get some expert advice from Stylists
  5. While you wait, browse through pictures of other members' outfits in Fashion Show mode, reading the comments they received on their outfits, and offering your feedback. You might get some good ideas for what you could wear and help some people improve their fashion.

Not sure which of the outfits in your closet to wear on a First Date? Fashionbone it… post pictures of a bunch of your outfits to the site and see which ones members like the most. Having trouble matching a tie to your suit? Snap some pictures with a few combinations and see what other members say.

Need ideas for what to wear to the office? Browse a Fashion Show and select “Office” as the occasion. Then flip through the outfits that come up – if you score each one, you’ll see what scores other members gave. Between the scores, comments, and your own fashion sense, you’ll soon have some ideas for exactly which items, designers, and colors to buy. Have you been voted Best Dressed by your friend? Show off your Fashion Bone by showcasing your best ensembles so others can learn by your example. Then share your constructive comments on other people’s outfits with them. Before long, you might be nominated to become one of our Stylists, with your own blog.

Fashion Show Mode

A Fashion Show always displays the most recently added outfits first, so you get new ones to look at every time you come back to the site.

You can advance to the previous or next outfit using the thumbnail pictures on the lower bar. Or you can drag your mouse over the outfit you are viewing in the main frame until the 1-10 scoring box shows up and select a score. That will automatically let you see how other members scored that outfit. Click in that box again and you will advance to the next outfit.

You can limit the Fashion Show to specific occasions (e.g. Weddings), gender, age group, item (e.g. only outfits with “skirts”), and designer. When you see an outfit that inspires you, save it to your Favorites so you can come back to it.

If you see a member with a great fashion sense, keep an eye on their closet by adding them to your Circle. When browsing through outfits in “Fashion Show” mode, you can switch from “Random” to “My Circle”, limiting the outfits that show up only to those from members in your Circle.

You don’t have to be logged in as a member to flip through the Fashion Show, but you do need to register (it’s free and quick) to post comments, flag favorites, add people to your Circle, and to post your own outfit to the site.

Posting Comments

When you have feedback or advice you would like to offer a member, just type in a comment in the box to the right of the picture. “Please be constructive, not snarky”. Definition of snarky

Thumbs Up for great comments: If you see that a comment is really constructive and has taught you something about fashion, then give it a Thumbs Up. Members who are recognized for their fashion sense accumulate stars. Eventually, five star members may be nominated to become Stylists.

Inappropriate Comments: Every member is putting themselves out there and deserves the consideration of their peers. But if you see that a comment someone posted is inappropriate, you can flag it for Admin to review. Members whose comments are frequently flagged may find themselves barred from the site for two consecutive life terms (in case they believe in reincarnation). A member can delete comments that others have posted about his/her outfit. And if you post a comment that you would later like to delete, you can do that, too.

Become a Stylist

If you post comments frequently and are recognized often with a “Thumbs Up” by other members, you’ll notice that you start having stars next to your Username. A panel of Stylists may nominate you to become a Stylist. If you accept, it will now say “Stylist” next to your Username in your Profile and when you post comments. Your comments will be prioritized and show up above everyone else’s comments.

You will also be invited to make your own blog posts in Fashionbone’s Style Lounge. We’ll give you an advanced search tool for finding outfits to blog about. For example, if you want to create a blog about boots worn by tall women in their mid-20s in New York, finding those pictures and selecting the ones you want for your blog will be a snap. Then you just write your review, hit “submit”, and your “Best Boots for Tall Woman” article is live for all to read in the Style Lounge. Who knows… you might be discovered by Vogue.

Other Features

Fashionbone has many of the little bells and whistles that you expect from social networking sites, including a button to forward an interesting outfit to a friend and a Shmooze search bar to find friends on Fashionbone. We’ll keep adding new features and do our best to make them intuitive so that you can discover them just by using the site instead of having to come back to “How it works” every few months.
